Is there any benefit to attacking another army of a similar rank? If there is no money bonus, why not just attack level 1s everytime? Sure it wouldn't be much fun to watch, but it'd be a sure victory.

Of a similar rank? Doesn't seem to be any. It serves as an indication of how your odds would be comparing to your army, not to check and count numbers of troops and their levels individually. On top of that, if you are recruited, once you have 3 troopers or ~20 strength (don't remember which), you get a "Rankings" tab unlocked. There you can compare how far you went among other recruits and the recruiter. That's pretty much it. So if you want to level, go for easy kills, missions may offer you some challenge down the road.

Do you still gain army strength when attacking lower levels? Illume 16:22, October 30, 2011 (UTC)

You don't get any strength (officially Power) from fighting. It's based solely on a number of troopers you have and their levels. The formula should be like this:

P=4*T+L, where
P – Power,
T – number of troopers you have,
L – sum of their levels.
For example, 5 troopers: 1 level 8, 2 level 7s, 2 level 6s. 4*5+8+2*7+2*6=20+8+14+12=54. You can try it on your own army.
